One day you look down at your hands, and say “what is THAT?”  Yes, it’s an AGE SPOT! – a flat, grey, brown or black colored spot on the back of your hands, tops of your arms, shoulders, your face…..nowhere is sacred!!

They just suddenly showed up, but not really.  They are the result of years in the sun, and, according to The Mayo Clinic, usually present around the age of forty, although they can present in younger people.

Age spots can look cancerous, but they are not – the worst part is how they look and that they are there to begin with!  You can bleach or lighten them or have them removed, but the best thing is to prevent them in the first place by using sunscreen and avoiding overexposure to the sun!

How do age spots form?

“Ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates the production of melanin. Melanin is the dark pigment in the epidermis that gives your skin its normal color. The extra melanin — produced to protect the deeper layers of your skin — creates the darker color of a tan. Age spots develop when the extra melanin becomes “clumped” or is produced in higher concentrations than normal.

Most often, it takes years of sun exposure for these dark spots to occur — they typically develop very slowly over time. Using commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds can eventually result in the same changes.”

Treatment Options:

FIRST!  Go to your dermatologist and GET IT CHECKED!  Your doctor can tell you what that spot is, and if it needs any medical test or treatment, or you are clear to use something to lighten or remove it.

If you get the “All Clear”, some options you have are

~ Bleaching Creams that lighten the spots over time

~ Laser Therapy which kill the cells that make the dark spots without harming the skin

~ Freezing (cryotherapy) which also destroys the dark spots but can leave a scar

~ Dermabrasion which uses rotating brushes to remove the top layers of skin and can leave a scab

~ Chemical Peels which uses strong acids to chemically burn off the top layers of skin

THERE IS ONE MORE WAY to Remove Age Spots, that the Mayo Clinic doesn’t know about yet!

Yep! I’ve explained all about it recently  in my post “The Ultimate 10 Minute Face Lift” , but have since had the opportunity to try it out on my own age spots.  After six weeks of using it five times a week, I am so excited to report that the age spots I have been targeting are coming off – in chunks!  A large one on my arm is coming off in layers, and now that it is thinning out, pieces of it are starting coming off, too. Painless, no scarring, no scab, no redness – they’re just falling off!

So, the good news is that if you are seeing those nasty Age Spots on your hands or arms, you have choices!  You can bleach, burn, laser, peel or scrub them off,OR you can use the Derma Firm Illuminator, and painlessly help them to fall off!  Nice new healthy skin is showing up underneath, too!
