Everyone has a passion for something(s) in their lives. Our passions set us apart and give us a reason to strive.”
Did you know that your passions say a lot about you and can help guide you through making choices of accessories and clothing? Style Upgrade gives us an opportunity to look at what makes us “tick” and encourages us to incorporate our passions into our personal image.
Whether you’re a dog trainer, painter, boater, avid reader, antiques collector, gardener, artist, or any other of a variety of interests, you can reflect your passion into your clothing and accessory choices. The items you select to create an ensemble can be reflective of your areas of interest.
Style Upgrade gives us some examples of areas of interest and words that describe what may help in their decisions:
Travel: changing, exotic, rich Physics: precise, mysterious, surprising Volunteer: caring, friendly, approachable
Hiker: nature, solitude, peace Birds: flight (freedom), sky, colorful Ocean: soothing, deep, everychanging
One of my passions is flowers, and when I have the time, I love to grow sweetpeas! I have grown many varieties of colors and types of sweetpeas, some large with short, thin stems, pastel in color, and others deep hued, vibrant colored with long, thick stems. You can see my passion for flowers in the colors I choose to wear, and the types of fabrics I feel most comfortable in.
My favorite color combinations are pinks, purples and blues, periwinkle and violets. I’m not a fan of oranges or greens, yellows or browns, so I guess you could say I like a “cool” color palette, reflective of my ideal flower garden.
Take a few moments and think about how your passions are expressed in your wardrobe and what other choices you can make to include them in your ensemble choices. What are you thinking?
Ahhh, I love spring flowers!!

Color selection is very personal, yet we sometimes allow fashion trends and our peers to have a great influence in our choices. A perfect example of this is the color black. Afraid to be caught in bright pink, vibrant turquoise or lime green? Then choose black to be safe! Maybe you don’t have a clue what a good color is for you, or you have had your “colors done” in the past, only to realize they really weren’t that complimentary on you.
Style Upgrade says to take a very good look at your skin, hair, eyes and hands to determine colors that will make you come alive and bring your image together. She says “Once I began to assess the colors that are in my skin tone, I was able to discover my most flattering colors and the colors that coordinate best with them. Even if it doesn’t sound easy, it is.
The colors that will look best on you are everywhere; you just have to look for them.
The colors in your skin is where we will start. There are two major colorations we will be looking for.” Style Upgrade gives me particular color combinations we are to look for.
First is the actual colors in your skin – Your Palm, Your Wrist, Your Ear, Your Gums, and Your Eyes… You will find these colors in the pads of your hands, the shadows of your skin, your veins and the interior of your mouth.”
In my palms and wrists, I found some shades of pink, red, lavender, blue, turquoise, and cream. Shades of yellow and green were seen mostly in my eyes, and my mouth had mostly darker pinks and some blues. Very interesting!
“The second set of colors we are looking for are neutrals. These are the shades we normally associate with skin, hair and eyes. You will have to look closely, but you will find more colors than you ever dreamed in your skin. These are colors that will look good on you, and the colors that complement them as well.”
My neutrals were more colorful in my hair, which in years gone by had shades of chestnut, blond, dark brown and even a little black. Today, there are increasing strands of grey and white woven throughout. My favorite neutrals are chestnut and auburn.
The hardest part is knowing that there are many colors I just love, but not all of them are complimentary to my skin tones and hair. When I was a teenager, I had a favorite canary yellow dress I enjoyed wearing until someone came up to me and told me that it wasn’t a good color for me. I have never worn yellow since, but now I see that certain shades would go nicely with my skin and hair tones!
When you can identify the shades that are just right for your skin, eyes and hair tones, you will find greater freedom in coordinating outfits. You will also feel more confident that the colors you are wearing create a very appealing image to present to the world!
Feel free to let me know what you think!

Having always thought that being in style was the same as being fashionable, I have learned there is a difference!
Style Upgrade says that “Fashion is the latest and most admired style in clothes and cosmetics and behavior.”
While Haute Couture, High Fashion, and High Style are all trend setting fashions, Style brings my fashion selections into my choices to create a style all my own. I have noticed that my fashion choices have changed as I have aged, and my body has changed. This doesn’t mean I don’t have style. Instead, I adapt my style to those changes, and try to project my changing self image into my style.
“Style, as a reflection of who we are, will certainly grow and change as we do, but the projection of our true selves will remain consistent with a consistent style. Style is as much an attitude of confidence and self assurance, as it is the clothing we wear.”
I have noticed, and I know many women my age agree, that as we age, our concerns about our appearance changes. Our bodies are changing and we try to adapt to these changes to present the best “self” to the world. When I do pull it all together, and I feel pulled together, I definitely feel more confident!
“Fashion is a manufactured product, Style is something that comes from within.”
While I am developing my style, I am also focusing on the health and wellness that comes from within. If the body being dressed is not healthy, it is evident by the way the clothes hang, makeup wears and the overall appearance is received. I feel that the state of our health shows on our skin, which is why skin care has become a prioity of mine. Reducing wrinkles, getting rid of age spots, having healthy and fresh looking skin is so important. The health and appearance of my skin creates the canvas upon which to paint my personal image through style and fashion. I can dress myself in the best looking fashions for my body, but if my skin looks dull and haggard, the image I have created is disjointed. Using all of Apriori Beauty products, including the Derma Firm Illuminator, has given me the canvas I love to build a confident and stylish image!
As something I have not been consciously aware of, I will be critiquing my style as it relates to current trends in fashion for my age and body type. I think I will also take a few risks with my wardrobe selections in the future to add some fashion fun to my style!

“Ahhh, you have such excellent taste!” “She has a style all her own!” Have you ever heard someone make either of these comments to you or about someone? We know what it infers or suggests, and really, what does it mean?
This week’s Style Upgrade lesson tells us the difference between Style and Taste. Although they are not the same, in some aspects, they do overlap. What am I talking about? Let’s define!
“Taste is being able to cull from the world around you those garments, objects and experiences that are most aesthetically pleasing.” I interpret this to mean that I can go shopping and whether it is high or low end, retail or sale, I select items that I like. When I go out to eat, or go to the grocery store, I purchase food that is to my liking – not yours – but all mine. Whether it’s brussel sprouts or barbecue potato chips, that is what I like and what is selected based on my taste.
“Style is taking these things and combining them with others that provide a glimpse of who you are, while creating a cohesive image.” You probably won’t see me crunching on barbecued potato chips when I’m all dressed up, but I think this means that when I look around and say “I like this, and I like that”, I can pull together specific items of my own taste - colors, textures, accessories, bling - to create an outfit that is all in my own style.
I may have excellent taste in clothes, but choose to dress in a casual style most of the time. I have heard it said that women over forty should never wear shorts or jeans. I gave up wearing shorts quite a while ago, but I still love my jeans. That’s my style choice.
The key for me is to take those things I really like, being tasteful, creating outfits that are stylish, and do accentuate my positives. I’ll tell you a secret - I have stopped wearing my son’s hand me down jeans, and have finally purchased a few pairs of dark dress jeans. So, I can still wear my jeans, which are part of my own personal taste. The darker colors, flared leg style, tops and accessories I select to wear with them will all come together to create a stylish look for my over fifty pear in jeans!
